Donut County
I bet you're hoping I do-nut make any puns
Why
- Satisfying core loop
- Expands (slightly) beyond 'eat small then big'
Why Not
- Doesn't expand on the core concept enough to be memorable
- Story best described as 'functional' and 'there'
Impressions
You can spend a solid 2 hours with Donut County, but you might not remember them in a month. The concept is fun (you control a hole which grows as it eats) and there are some nice touches of humour, but despite some token efforts at puzzles nothing much changes from the first level to the last. Characters/story exist and offer a nice change of pace from the holey gameplay, but I finished the game a couple hours ago and could barely tell you two things about them. Sometimes you get games with a cool concept that you wish we longer so you could see where they took it; this is the opposite. There's enough to make it a perfectly satisfying, novel experience that's worth its sale price but not enough to really recommend it. Pretty much the definition of a 'thumbs middle' if the option existed.
