Of the Devil: Episode 0
What if the noir detective was a lawyer?
Why
- Quality writing & mystery so far
- Nice soundtrack & plenty of visual flair
- Characters & world seem interesting
- Twist surprised me but still felt earned
Why Not
- Seems a little hand-holdy, but it is just a demo
Impressions
This is quite an interesting way to promote your game; a free demo covering the basic mechanics and giving a taste of the story/characters which can then be continued with longer 'DLC' episodes. It definitely worked on me; I'll be picking up the available episodes next time they're on sale.
Episode 0 introduces 4 characters who seem like they'll stick around; the grizzled veteran cop London, his aggressive partner Reyes, our protagonist the sardonic lawyer Morgan and her nemesis, the very 'L'-like prosecutor Emma. The detectives fill their archetypes well; while the relationship between Morgan and Emma seems like it'll be a primary plot thread.
The gameplay centres around pretty typical clue-gathering from the environment and conversation, before culminating in a poker-themed confrontation where Morgan tears the detective's case apart. Of course her ability to do so is not entirely down to her skill as a lawyer, but that's something you'll discover for yourself if you make the excellent decision to give this a shot.
