Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley
Now I understand why Moomin was so eager for him to come back in the sequel
Why
- Cozy art
- Funny/charming writing lives up to the brand
- Chill enough for your non-gamer SO to play
Why Not
- A somewhat noticeable step down from Winter's Warmth if you played that first
Impressions
My evil plan to ease The Wife into gaming via the Moomin franchise continues, this time with the first game in the series. Watching her play definitely gave me an appreciation of how much the devs improved from this to Winter's Warmth, but the heart of what makes that game great is here too. Excellent, apparently in character dialogue and beautiful art-like graphics carry the fairly simple gameplay, keeping it interesting enough even if you're just watching you significant other play. The overall story is also pretty great, following Snufkin's journey to destroy the Park Keeper's never ending rules so he can enjoy summer with his best friend.
The sequel being an improvement in every way shouldn't discourage you from playing this one; it just means you should play it first so you can appreciate the improvements winter brings. I'd recommend this to anyone who's trying to sneak the SO into liking video games, and strongly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the Moomin-verse.
